Preparation and Standardization of 0.1N Silver Nitrate (AgNO3) Solution in pharmaceutical labs by using below steps:
Steps involved in the Preparation and Standardization of 0.1N Silver Nitrate
Step-1: Reagent preparation
Step-2: AgNO3 solution preparation
Step-3: AgNO3 solution Standardization
Step-4: Calculation
Preparation of 0.1 N AgNO3 solution:
- Take the required apparatus for this and a Weight of 0.584g sodium chloride (Previously dried)
- Transfer the sodium chloride into a volumetric flask of 100ml. Fill the flask with distilled water up to the mark.
- Shake and mix the content to make a homogeneous solution.
- Now our 0.1N NaCl solution is ready to use.
Step-1: Reagent Preparation: (Pottasium Chromate solution)
- Dissolve 5g potassium chromate in 100 ml distilled water
- Shake the solution well to mix the content properly
- Prevent the solution from direct light exposure
- Store the solution in a Dark and cool place.
Step-2: AgNO3 solution preparation:
- Take the weight of 4.245g silver nitrate
- Tranfer the silver nitrate in volumetric flask of 250ml
- Fill the volumetric flask with distilled water up to the mark.
- Shake and mix the content to make a homogeneous solution.
- Now our Expected 0.1N AgNO3 is ready.
- Next, we have to standardize the silver nitrate solution.
Step-3: AgNO3 solution Standardization:
- Measure 10 ml of sodium chloride solution and transfer it into a conical flask.
- add 1 ml potassium chromate as an indicator solution into the conical flask.
- Shake and rotate the flask to mix the content.
- Next. fill a burette with the newly prepared silver nitrate (AgNO3) solution.
- Note the initial burette reading
- Begin the process of titrating a sodium chloride (NaCl) solution by slowly adding silver nitrate (AgNO3) from the burette.
- Make sure to stir the flask vigorously while performing the titration.
- The reddish-brown color formation indicates the end-point of the titration.
- Now note the final burette reading.

Step-4: Calculation:
The formula for Preparation and Standardization of 0.1N Silver Nitrate:
N2V2=N1V1
Where, N1 (Normality of NaCl= 0.1 N
V2 (Volume of NaCl)= 10 ml
V2 (Volume of AgNO3)= Final Burrete Reading- Initial Reading
Now we have to find out the Normality of the AgNO3 solution (N2) by using below formula:
N2= N1 V1/V2
Finally, Get the Normality of the AgNO3 solution by putting a value in the above equation.
